SFM or MMD? Beginner So, I'm considering starting to practice animation with a free animation software like either SFM or MMD. Basically my primary focus is figuring out character animation, which both SFM and MMD are kind of geared for. Mmd models are pretty complex and they are a different file type, PMX/PMD, so we will have to convert them to a file type sfm can use/or convert, Smd/DMX, here is what you will need to do so.

About your pros and cons though, yes you can import Source characters into Blender, but a lot of the things like rigs are incompatible, so you'd have to make those again, you mentioned that SFM however has all the models you need, if that's so, don't bother getting into more complicated software, it's be ridiculously difficult to make, say, a TF.
